Storing files in SQL Server or using the API to manage the filesystem

I am in the middle of a tough decision and, while I searched a lot for this subject, I still can't make an assertive decision.

Basically, I need to store a large number of files (during the course of time). Not only storing files, but also doing a full text search in them. While they are mostly .docx, they can be any filetype. Regarding this matter, should I store them in SQL Server, using the FileStreamcolumn type, or should I just store, for example, the path to the files and do all the file management, including the text search, using, for instance, an API?

The more detail I get in this matter the better, because I am still deciding what should be the best case here :)
